Windows Defender is an anti-spyware program, it won't protect you against viruses. It's OK but not the best anti-spyware program there is.

Windows firewall is so basic it's not really safe. Sadly, Norton firewall isn't that much better.

Norton anti-virus is actually quite good, although a lot of people will tell you otherwise. There are better AV programs (but AVG isn't one of them). Norton anti-virus doesn't include a firewall, you would need to buy Norton NIS. But there are better options.

NOD32 and Kaspersky are the best anti-virus programs and will protect you against other malware, e.g. spyware. If you want to use a free AV program, Avast is about the best. Better at finding and removing viruses that AVG, not so many false alarms as AntiVir.

If you want an anti-spyware program, AVG Anti-Spyware and SuperAntiSpyware are about the best of the freebies.

OnlineArmor / Comodo firewalls are both free and both better than most firewalls you can buy.
