Anti Virus runs automatically, but may or may not update itself automatically.

You should check that it is running ( down by the clock, there should be an icon to signify anti virus) if you hover your mouse over it, the icon should show its name. That wat you can tell itif's the anti virus.

if you right mouse click on it, you should get a menu to update, or download updates etc.

This should be done every day.
