Is there some sort of Antivirus boot cd?

Some sort of antivirus program that runs in DOS (without having to have like norton installed) that will do a virus scan? For instance if the computer is so screwed up that nothing can run.

If the problem is virus related, the best best is to yank the hard drive and install it in a good running computer as a slave drive. Now scan with the good computers virus scanner. Many virus scan install disks also will boot a limited scanner.

Hiren's Boot CD has many utilitities within it. It also a few Anti-virus software loaded which run of the CD, but you do have to download the virus patches and copy it into the Virus def folders before you burn the CD. It's a bootable CD and the anti-virus prog's can do a full system scan. But you need to have a p2p program to download this software.

And there's also Stinger from McAfee, which clean's not all but some of the major high rish viruses from your system

Some are more difficult to remove than others and require a specialised removal tool or manual removal. You could also try booting your PC into safe mode and doing a scan.

I can't really answer your question, but I wanted to let you know that Norton's is not the best for your computer. I had it and my computer started to run EXTREMELY slow to the point where we could hardly start it without it freezing. When I took it in to be repaired they told me that there was a lot of dust plus Nortons was not good for my computer (Dell with windows XP) and that the reason it ran so slow was because Nortons takes up A LOT of space on your hard drive. So they removed it and installed a program called AVG 7.5 and Ad-Aware. I've had no problem since....it's MUCH easier to update and generally use.

Usually AV programs with expired subscriptions still stay 'on', but don't get any updates anymore. That means they protect you less and less every day, because they won't detect new viruses.

Geeesh.......I hate that program. Norton Ghost simply takes over your computer and it does not allow you choices.

About the subscription, no it won't stop working. It will continue to annoy you and ask you to download latest version etc... It is a pain in the butt.

Only thing is if you do not upgrade, it will not update the new virus definitions and your virus protection will get out of date very soon.

I found AVG software free edition is good, user friendly and it does not bother your computer and it does not take over everything. I highly recommend you to install that after removing Norton.

I tried to download and install a trial version of Zone Alarm security suite and it's telling me that I have "Computer Associates Antivirus" installed on my computer and I would have to remove it in order to install the Zone Alarm.

I never knew I had such a thing, and could not find it while looking on my C drive.

So, since I don't know how to find it, I can't delete it. If anybody could tell me how to find CAA, I would appreciate it very much. I have Windows XP professional 2002.

If you need any additional information, please let me know since I really want to get this CAA deleted and install my Zone Alarm trial.

If your antivirus scanner has a background scanner it is very important that you put in the startup list. My antiviurs out of Beijing, China loads on startup and also runs a memory scan before any programs load. Very important.

Plus with or without a background scanner you will not be protected if you fail to put in the start up list. You will have to always remember when your programs load to also open your antiviurs software.

No it dosen't stop scanning but instead of it starting with start up you have to click it to bring it up and run the scan.Hope this helps and good luck!
There is a good chance that if you remove it from the startup list it may not check for viruses but..... It is possible that your virus scan software actually runs as a service and it will continue to run in the background even though the system tray icon is not present.

If you're worried about the fact that it makes your computer start up slow, I would recommend looking into AVG Anti-Virus Free. Last night, I attempted to uninstall Etrust Ez Antivirus from my dads computer. (he has Windows XP Service Pack II) It wouldn't uninstall, stating that it was unable to remove a specific file from the registry. I was able to boot the computer into safemode, but once I got there was unable to go to start, run (to type in regedit). I rebooted and logged in normally. This morning I attempted to use the computer, it was loaded, but when I clicked on start, run (or anything else) nothing would happen. I tried Ctrl, alt, delete to see if anything else was running and that didn't work. I shut the computer off to boot back into safemode, but now the computer is stuck at the Light blue screen that just says Windows XP. I reset the defaults in bios and am still unable to boot into windows. Tried to run the repair from the Win Xp cd, but it tells me I don't have a hard drive. Can someone help please???

Boot from XP install cd and see commands with help ... is a fixboot command or fixmbr comand.... that would fix any booting problem... then use safe mode to desinstall any program... if these not work then u have to put your hard drive in another computer, backup data and reistall windows... good luck!

First of all you can only use one antivirus program or you will have serious conflict. You can use three or for antispyware programs without any conflict.

You should remove Nortons as it is a resource hog and has a very long history of being garbage. Each an every year this program continues to get worse.

Regarding anti virus / anti spy ware programmes, none of them are 100% fool proof. They need to be constantly updated via internet. You must also know that updates will be released by the vendor only after viruses starts infecting the system.

The best way to protect your system is by good browsing habits.

Any anti virus scanner will do the job as long as you keep them up to date with antivirus definitions. I personally would pump for zone alarm which comes with an excellent antivirus and security feature. It has a free version also.

They will get in each other's way and you will have "issues". Take one off and just run with one. Yes - lots of slowdowns. They might even detect that the other is a virus and do quarantine work.

avg free from grisoft is good. also try Spybot Search and Destroy, they find most things and also provide a guard/immunization feature that alerts you of changes and viruses. Windows XP of course is not free, but if you're still running 2000 or 95/98, then you're probably just asking for it. Sounds like you are anyway with your "underground" downloads. Typically you can use only 1 AntiVirus program on your computer, especially the big programs like Norton, TrendPC, etc because the engines that they use are not compatible with each other. This applies for firewalls as well, you don't want to have two.

That typically doesn't apply to spyware programs though. I have 1 AV program, 2 spyware programs, and a pop-up blocker/spyware program installed all at the same time. It's important because sometimes one catches what the other does not.

Most of the antivirus softwares run ON your PC. They don't communicate with the server unless it's updating the virus definitions files which happens once in a week or whatever is configured.

Regarding two antivirus packages, theoretically it can be done, though I don't see any value add. Some antivirus block the other antivirus from running. Just check the antivirus website to see if there are any compatibility issues.

My McAfee protection expires today and I borrowed a Norton Antivirus from somebody that can be stored on 3 computers. She said it dont' go out until April. I like McAfee better and will be renewing McAfee later next week. I just wanted to know if I could keep McAfee on there without uninstalling it until I get ready to update it, or will that mess up or slow my computer down in some way?

The use of 2 or more anti-virus programs at the same time can cause major conflicts. The 2 scanning engines will fight each other to scan every file that you read, write or execute which can cause a major computer slowdown. For the same reason, using 2 A-Vs can cause you to have less protection from the various malware, not more.

George is right, when updates are downloaded it can change some files. AVG is reporting it as a change, not an infection or virus. Be careful and don't go changing or eliminating these files because if you do, you will really find yourself with troubles. Do a complete deep scan with a free program like spyware terminator, it will check for infected files and virus. You can find it on trusted sites such as majorgeeks.com.

AVG by Grisoft is definitely NOT "The Best". Unfortunately one of the things it is not the best at, is doing what is is supposed to do, detecting viruses!

Each AV company gives virus's a different ID. This might have a different designation with other companies. Also if you searched for it in all caps like you listed here, it might not register in the search engine. Usually you need to be very accurate in how it is spelled. Exactly as the program that discovered it spells it. Sometimes minor change will result in negative search results.

When I used Norton Antivirus, I would occasionally run into a software installation that would cause problems, but it was never with Windows Update.

I now use eTrust from CA, and I have never had to disable realtime protection for any installation or update. About the only time I disable realtime protection is when I run Spybot Search %26 Destroy, as it causes somewhat of a slowdown, particularly on one of my computers.
There is no need to disable the auto-protect feature at all. Unless something is really messed up and it says download has failed or something. Most anti-viruses do not prevent updates at all. At most they may ask you if the update program can access the internet (and should remember the answer)

Don't believe anything they tell you is free. It's not. Somewhere along the way you will have to pay someone for something. I got well and truly done over by a sneaky techo. who took advantage of my not knowing enough to ask the right questions. He told me the CA he put on my machine was free!! What a load! The so called 'free' version ran out in three months and then I found I had to pay for the new version. And I found out I have to pay for the newest every year! Don't believe them they are all out to 'take' you. Good luck.

The answer to your question will differ from person to person as they will tell you that the one they use is the best, but that is there personal preference.

From my experience , antivirus and anti spy ware is only as good as its data base, it does not matter, which one it is, if it has not got the virus in its data base then it will not pick up that particular virus,

There are thousands of wild viruses out there; your guess to how many is as good as mine. So I think in picking any antivirus and antispyware, is down to personal choice and which one you are happy with.

I have tried out most of them, paid and free versions and they all have their good points and their bad points. The two that I would not recommend, from my experience with them are Norton and Mcafee.

My experience with Norton was that it slowed my pc down that it was like having a virus installed, and Mcafee would not work for me. I have tried True Sword, did not think much of it gets rid of 3 viruses and then you have to buy it to remove the rest. That did not impress me.

Avast! is a great Anti-Virus program. It is not fake software. Although I wouldn't trust my computer with avast! simply because not too many people use it, I still recommend it. I use AVG Anti virus which I personally think is better than avast! It depends on preference...

It is normally recommended to have only 1 antivirus realtime engine running on a computer, but some of us like having different manual scanning engines for thoroughness. Only real problem of having multiple realtime engines is that they can cause some resource issues, application errors and possible detection loops. However since you are not having any problems then keep running the way you are, but if you experience any slowness or errors on running programs then i would suggest disabling the realtime engine for all but 1 of the manufacturers. There is no such thing as the "best" antivirus software IMO so keep the one that you are most comfortable with. As long as it is a reputable manufacturer then the program, engine, signature updates should be readily available.

You should check that it is running ( down by the clock, there should be an icon to signify anti virus) if you hover your mouse over it, the icon should show its name. That wat you can tell itif's the anti virus.

Check if there is a folder C:\Program Files\EZ Anitvirus

There may be an uninstall.exe file in the folder.

Just deleting the folder does not fully uninstall a program because it can put files all over the place and entries in the registry.

You should download CCleaner and click on Tools button. The n select EZ antivirus from the list of programs to uninstall.
