Antivirus and antispyware only remove viruses and spyware, they do not protect you.
Firewalls also do nothing unless you use them correctly, and even then, it cant keep you from getting viruses, it can only keep spyware from sending back info to whoever created it. If you accidentally approve it, then its worthless.
You should use mozilla firefox instead of internet explorer or aol in order to keep from getting viruses.
