Thre is no best AV. Stay away from norton and macafee as they are both resource hogs and will slow down you PC.
I use AVG @ grisoft.com

Mcavie. Spelt totally wrong. Not norton its a system hog. Windows defender is not an anti virus and doesn't offer as much protection. Duh!!!
Use Linux or a Mac and there is little problem with either. Failing that which is best changes over time and can even change rapidly. I suggest running at least 2 AV programs as virus deffinitions reach AV companies at different times. If you rely on a single one you may be unprotected from a virus active in the wild for weeks until somebody submits a sample to your particuler brand of AV. It is also helpfull in figuring out if you have a false alarm.
