there are many different free virus scan free downloads and reviews on download.com.. are these programs safe and why are they free? is it because its more of a try before u but because u dont get the full program?
this AVG anti virus free edition 7.5.484 has had over 35 000 000 downloads does that mean its good coz i have never heard of it but ive heard of the free AD AWARE and MCAFEE ones but this one has more downloads so the people like it better?

I've been using the free version of AVG for over 7 years and it is wonderful.
Ad-aware isn't anti virus, it's anti spyware. I prefer Spybot Search and Destroy from http://www.spybot.info.
Mcafee is just a free trial and it is a pain in the **** once you have it.

I have been using AVG Free edition for several years now and the computer store that built our custom computer recommends it as well - enough that they install it on all their newly built computers. A well known community forum at http://forums.whatthetech.com is a great place to go to find good recommendations for both anti-virus and spyware programs. They also provide free assistance with spyware removal. AVG Free is one of the ones listed on their suggested "installed protection and programs" list (see source link). They used to be known as TomCoyote.org
AVG is fine. I dumped Norton and now use that. Stick to AVG.

AVG, Ad-Aware and other programs are free. McAfee isn't. It's just a trial. AVG used to be a good program, but now there are many people complaining of it, so you should choose a different one. Avast and AntiVir are good choices and completely free.
