You may also want to update it manually by going to
http://www.avira.com/en/suppor...
You will need to open Avira and click on Update, and than manually select the VDF file from Avira's website.

Probably the servers are busy, or down when you try, try at different times. I had problems before, but none recently, if your computer stays on it should update automatically
